Knot Southern Tour + G&G Music Bonus

If you've been following us on twitter, you may have seen some tweets hinting at a romp down south. After over a year of planning and a whole lot of support from friends and fans, those tweets are now true. With the Knot Mobile all packed up, I'll be heading south to spread the word of American Made grosgrain and sling belts to stores and campuses along the way. As Knot grows, we are beginning our journey from online webstore only, to boutiques and retailers across the country. With many fan suggestions we have been able to build quite the list of shops located in favorite towns from Kennebunkport, ME to Oxford, MS and beyond. On a recent trip to Washington, DC, Caitlin and I had the opportunity to stop into one of our favorite stores, The Fine Swine.

The Fine Swine

Its obvious that owner John Hickman has his finger on the pulse of what is going on in the haberdashery world. When we arrived, John was outside in an Adirondack chair puffing on a fine cigar and reading a magazine. With a popped collar and khakis, it was a great scene that I'm sure the people of Kensington see on a daily. Upon entering the store you are welcomed by his staff, we met a prepped-up Thomas, and immediately taken back by the wide selection of goods.

Headed to the beach? How about the swimwear section. Hunting? He's got tweed and Barbour. Tailgating? A Tervis tumbler will keep that cocktail cold. On top of the wonderful brands at The Fine Swine, we found ourselves engulfed with pieces of John's personal art collection of Old English fox hunting scenes, swine related table pieces, vintage books and just really cool antique things you would expect to find behind glass at your country or racquet club rather than on display at a store.

The Four Majors Belt | Coming this Summer

Everyone has been emailing us about this belt and I'm proud to say it is almost ready to be released. Since we first hinted at this leather-backed style of belt back in January, it has taken many turns along the way. The genuine leather we first used for our samples turned out to be harder to find, and with the high quality grosgrain ribbon we currently use for our d-rings, we weren't about to settle for anything less. Put the two materials together, along with our solid brass hardware, and what you have is an American Made belt with 100% genuine leather and finely corded grosgrain. The Four Majors design will be limited in numbers and be the first leather-backed style in our upcoming "Back Nine" collection.

Positive Is How I Live

Its sort of funny how in my last post I said "we love New England weather and everything that comes with it." A couple of weeks of sunshine, rum drinks and sailing made me realize I left out the "except winter" jab in that sentence. When we left St. John it was sunny and around 80 degrees. Upon touch down in Boston it was 11 degrees and according to the cab driver, "You very lucky! Make home with no snow problem!" Very lucky indeed...

Amidst the beautiful beaches, rum and fun, and views from our house overlooking the islands as far as I could see, it all became pretty clear. Live life to the fullest and each day will be big and beautiful.

While we love New England weather and everything that comes with it, January is all about recharging the batteries and setting our sites on the warm months ahead. 2011: Ready or Knot, Here We Come!

I hope everyone had a fantastic New Year celebration and wherever that celebration was, you all Got Knotty! 2010 for us was a big year; a stepping stone and huge push to get the Knot name and lifestyle out into the public eye. Parties, events, collaborations, more parties and more events was the name of the game. We met some amazing new people, discovered some unreal new music and helped out some great organizations and charities. Check out our Facebook page for some of my favorite jams and group shout outs.

In 2011 we're making a few changes. Our site will be updated a bit to make your shopping experience even easier. I'll be posting more pictures and a bunch more music. To our portfolio we'll be adding kids sizes, new products, pup accessories and lots of new belt designs. We're also creating a belt that is a combination of grosgrain ribbon and leather, something that is new and hasn't been done before. Home for the Holidays - Winter Playlist 2010

'Tis the Season to be Knotty

Knotty or Nice 2010

Last year we had our first ever "Knotty or Nice" Christmas party. While our brand was still making a name for itself, about 160 people turned out for the event at a local bar we had rented out. This year, the Knotty word got out big time and over 260 people bought tickets in advance for a complete sellout. People were trying to get tickets on Craigslist! The new venue was a huge loft space where we previously held our official launch party, "Spring for Knot." Avion tequila flowed, cocktails were a plenty and although the speakers blew out an hour into the party, everyone was still getting crazy on the back dance floor. Here are a few pictures to recap the night...'tis the season to be Knotty....

Memories of our first Holiday Market

Our first official trade show was around this time last year at the Downtown Crossing Holiday Market in Boston. The setting was a long white tent with about 30 different vendors inside. There were artisan jewelers, Swiss chocolatiers, farm market stands and plenty of good food. Everyone had their own setup and on one side of us was a farm market stand complete with hot cider and on the other side was a master baker. A fresh pastry in the morning and a cup of cider in the afternoon was routine all week long.

Every morning I loaded up the car with our belts, display gear and the Knot banner. I also brought a mannequin to give our display some substance. I named him Tom, after my older brother, and dressed him in a golf shirt, red pants, belt and a Santa hat which I think he enjoyed. After plugging in the Christmas lights and setting up the rest of our display, it was go time.

Temperatures started out in the teens and worked their way up to the mid-twenties. Being outside all day long in the freezing cold wasn't the perfect summertime vibe our Knot lifestyle was modeled after, but we smiled and chatted it up with customers as if we were on Nobadeer in Nantucket. In fact, that previously mentioned hot cider, spiked with a little whiskey, made the beach feel like it was only steps away.

The first day we didn't sell a single belt. The next day, we sold two. From there we began to have a steady increase in sales and it wasn't so bad standing in the cold for close to eight hours a day. I won't lie, the whiskey helped, and it was great to see people become acquainted with our new product! To get the Knot name out there and meet some incredible people who had an appreciation for our American made products was what it was all about. It was also awesome to meet all of the different vendors and hear their stories of trade shows gone wrong and offer us tips from their own experiences. No matter what you were selling at your stand, someone was always there to help you out or lend a hand. We were all one big freezing cold family under that tent. As the week went on and our happy hour started earlier each day, I didn't want to be anywhere else. A few of our friends would even pop over after work for a hot cider before they got their nights started. Very Knotty indeed.

Far Hills In The Fall

Eighty degree sun filled days and long dinners outside on a friend's patio are now only memories. Our play areas have moved from boats and beaches to horse race tailgates and Alumni weekends. Think of a well built fire, leaves falling around you and hot cup of spiked apple cider. Take a deep breath, Fall is here.

The above is the same for both students heading back to school and those who have since graduated. Shorts and flip flops during the day and slacks and sweaters at night create the simple change each day we all need and love. Not until November will all of your summer gear be put to rest for the crisp months ahead. Exchange those swim shorts for deep cords and ask a friend where they got their Barbour jacket. Its no doubt the most diverse time of year for everyone in New England in terms of their style and dress, and at Knot we relish the Fall season. Bust out the tweed, lace up a pair of duck boots and don't forget your Knot belt! Of course, I don't need to tell you about the changing of seasons in New England. What I really want to share with you is an event located among the many townships of New Jersey.

In less than two weeks, Knot Belt Co. will be heading to the rolling countryside of the Moorland Farmlands for the Far Hills Race Meeting. This horse race is better known to the attending mid-twenty somethings as "The Hunt, " and we didn't name a belt after this event for nothing. Having attended The Hunt since 2002 and only missing one year while I was abroad, it has grown into not just a tradition, but a meeting ground and business platform like no other. It is a reunion that brings together friends and family. It is where stories are told of summers past and everyone catches up the way people used to, face to face, and welcome the coming of Fall.

Rain or shine, the masses pile out of NJ Transit trains and set off for the hills to find friends. You will surely bump into someone you know along the way to your tailgate and be pulled to their spot for a cocktail. After a mimosa or two, its time to meet up with the people you actually came with and enjoy the day to the fullest. After all, its only 11:00am. You've had a full Irish breakfast supplied by your tailgating neighbors and before you can finish, the lunch spread is already being laid out. The Hunt is about getting together with friends to socialize, eat, drink...and drink some more. When the sun is shining, the drop gate of a truck is the best place to lay back and watch the clouds whisk by. In times of foul weather the sanctuary of a suburban is a quick way to get warm. Regardless of the weather conditions be sure to place your bets on a few races, even if you don't see a single horse. Don't be alarmed when someone hands you a stiff mix to wash down those buttery steaming potatoes, they're only sharing the love. Cocktailing all day may cause you to lose a friend in the crowds while you're walking around so make sure you have a beacon of reference to get back safely. I suggest the finish line tower or a rowdy tent on the corner aisle of the infield. Regardless, if you wander long enough you'll be sure to find another friend to grab a refill with and maybe even another sandwich.

Friends, new and old

As each year passes, friendships and knowing the lay of the land grow stronger. In our first attending years, we would hop from one parent's spot to another and snack on cheese plates and meat trays while tipping back fifths of whiskey. A little juvenile yes, but hey we were in college. Last year, the muddiest and wettest year ever, there was a combined tailgate put together by friends from St. Lawrence University and pros of the whole scene. It lacked nothing; full bar, kegs upon kegs and tons of hot food. The tarps kept people dry and there was even a bouncer for the seven spots we held in case it got rowdy.

As long as you have your ticket to get on the grounds, there will always be a tailgate to cozy up to. And cozy up we do. Having milked the first couple years from parents, the next few with a combo of friends, the need for your own spot comes to be. Either way, friends across the east coast will swing by to sample your gumbo and pour another sociable.

This year, the seventh year after my first attendance to The Hunt, and the second year for Knot Belt Co., I'm proud to say "come on over and get knotty at our very own spot!" We'll be bumping tunes (checkout our new Fall playlist below), sipping on cider and tossing back more than a few adult beverages. To date there are about fifty in attendance and there's always room for fifty more! So pack the koozies and don't forget your Far Hills Horsebit belt because its going to be a Knotty day!

Weekapaug Groovin'

Just south of Boston lies the amazing beach community of Weekapaug, RI. When I say beach community, don't picture hordes of people getting off a ferry onto an island or long lines of people outside of boutiques and jewelry stores all waiting to get their shopping in before heading back to their respective cities. Instead, picture families strolling down sand paths to grab gear out of their Bermudaesque beach-boxes and college grads reuniting with old friends on a front porch that overlooks the ocean. Almost everyone that drives or bikes by raises a hand to give a wave.

I was lucky enough to be a guest at a friend's house that was nothing short of...well, fun! Great hospitality is also part of this groove here in Weekapaug. Mid-morning, friends would arrive, or leave from the night before. After our hellos and goodbyes, we'd all retreat to the beach. With Hurricane Earl no longer a threat, the skies were full of sun and an amazing shade of blue. Its a good thing everyone had their Knot sunglasses!

Around two o'clock or so, cocktail hour in these parts, we'd head back to home base to bust out the Cornhole boards, have a few Dark n Stormys and get ready for the afternoon barbecue up on the softball fields. It was great having everyone together, all on the same page for this momentous weekend.

The thing about Weekapaug is that everyone pitches in and lends a hand. Several times I caught myself standing and watching everyone help everyone else, all while cracking jokes and making conversation. Whether it was helping someone carry a grill or softball gear, or tossing in a couple bucks when a wallet wasn't where it should be, everyone was willing to pitch in. It really reminded me of my hometown, which doesn't often happen.

The barbecue, which also doubled as a fundraiser for several different charities, ended well after the sun went down - only to continue at my friend's house until well into the next morning.

We blew out the tiki torches around 10am, shared a few Knotty tales from the night before while laying in the yard and piled in the suburban like one big happy family to grab some food and go for a drive. What followed was golf for the guys and naps and beach time for the girls…a perfect way to ease into the afternoon.

We all came together again on the deck at Weekapaug Golf Club and a lobster and steak dinner with my friend's family was planned. While having a few sociables, we shared stories of great times back in college and great times to look forward too. The friends I have now are the friends I'll have for life, no questions asked. Each story ended with everyone laughing. I'm sure you've all been there before, around a dinner table that's better than any bar in the world. Before the plates were cleared we could hear voices of people coming up the driveway and another beer pong tournament was soon underway. It was around 1am that the last of the lobster was polished off, the last story was told, and a sleeve of homemade cookies were devoured.

Monday was upon us and it was a toss up between tennis and the open water. Our energy levels were slightly down and the once two dozen strong crew now had dwindled down to around seven - a perfect number to head out on the boat and do a little tubing and shark spotting. After brunch at The Cooked Goose, we drifted off the shores of Watch Hill and scoped out gorgeous sail boats skimming in and out of different harbors. By four o'clock, we all came to a pile on the bow of our vessel and soaked in the last rays of the day before heading to shore.

I met at least a dozen people over the weekend and definitely talked to over a dozen more. Since then I've received a handful of emails wishing me well with Knot and thanking me for the sunglasses. The charities raised some money, everyone smiled and laughed each day, and the stories I can't share here will be told Labor Day Weekend after Labor Day Weekend. Thanks to all who Got Knotty and to all you beachheads who defined for me what "Weekapaug Love" really means.

While the vision of Knot Clothing & Belt Co. has been around since my days at St. Lawrence University, the company itself is only a little over a year old to our fans, friends and families. Without you all, Knot simply wouldn't exist. Now that we've got those 365+ days under our belt so to speak, I want to say thanks for all of your support. I hope that with this blog you'll get a better understanding of what Knot is all about behind the scenes and our ride along the way.
